Data Recovery Software
For most of our work we develop out own software in-house which is not commercially available to the public. However, in many cases data can be recovered by using software tools. Over the years, we have tested almost all commercially available data recovery software and there are only a few tools that we found were up to standard.
Precautions when using data recovery software
All professional data recovery companies will take a clone of the hard disk, which is stored either as an image or an identical copy stored on another hard disk (or any other media.
Data recovery software should never be used on a drive that failing and should only be used in situations where a drive has been formatted, files deleted and when you are certain that there is nothing physically wrong with the hard disk or other media you need the data from.
If the data is critical and there are no recent backups, consider sending it to a data recovery company instead rather than risk losing the data due to failure during scanning.
The main precautions to take are
- NEVER install data recovery software on the hard disk that you need the data. Ideally clone the drive. Installing more software on the machine may actually overwrite the exact data you are looking for.
- Whatever software you choose to use, follow the instructions exactly
- If, at any time the drive starts making noises or hangs the computer during the scanning or copying process then stop the process immediately. and contact us on 0800 072 3282. Further damage is likely when the hard disk starts making noises.
Only use data recovery software under the following circumstances
- The hard disk has been formatted
- Files have been deleted
- You suspect virus damage
- Files or folders have disappeared from the drive
When not to use data recovery software
- When the files are critical to you or your business
- When the hard disk is making strange noises
- When the computer does not recognize the disk
- If you are unsure how to use data recovery software
